World Gorilla Day 2025: Bonane, the silverback from Kahuzi-Biega, resurfaces

Good news for nature lovers: Bonane, the famous silverback gorilla from Kahuzi-Biega National Park, was recently spotted near the park headquarters in Tshivanga, in the Kabare territory.

His presence, almost familiar, gives the impression that he has come to « check in » on those who watch over him and his family. Above all, it is reassuring to know that Bonane is alive and that he is not alone, according to the official website of Kahuzi-Biega National Park (PNKB).

Since the start of the armed conflict in South Kivu in February 2025, monitoring teams have had great difficulty locating the gorillas. Incursions by armed groups have made travel dangerous and disrupted conservation efforts. But Bonane’s reappearance, accompanied by a few members of his group, shows that despite the pressures on their habitat, the gorillas are holding on.

Kahuzi-Biega National Park is a World Heritage Site and the only place where eastern lowland gorillas can be observed in their natural environment. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is now a symbol of resilience, biodiversity, and hope.

On this World Gorilla Day, the message is strong and hopeful: « As long as there is life, there is hope. Let us remain committed to peace, to the Park, and to our gorillas. »
