COP 30: Truth as a pillar of climate action

In Belém, at COP 30, a historic turning point occurred: for the first time, the UN placed the integrity of information at the heart of the fight against climate change. Faced with the rise of misinformation and denial, a Global Declaration was adopted, committing states, institutions, and civil society to defend scientific truth as an essential condition for climate action.

The Declaration sets out an ambitious roadmap:

– Guarantee reliable, evidence-based information, while respecting freedom of expression.

– Strengthen a diverse and resilient media ecosystem.

– Integrate information integrity into UNFCCC programs.

– Ensure equitable access to data that is understandable to all.

– Protect journalists, researchers, and environmental defenders from threats and attacks.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva issued a solemn warning, « Climate change is no longer a threat to the future, it is a tragedy of the present.  »

António Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN, denounced greenwashing and online harassment campaigns, while Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, reminded us that without truth, there is no trust, and without trust, there is no collective action.

Thirteen countries have already signed the Declaration, including Belgium, Finland, and Germany. This growing mobilization reflects a global awareness that disinformation is a direct threat to social stability and to societies’ ability to act in the face of the climate crisis.

Since June 2025, the Global Fund for Information Integrity has received nearly 450 proposals from 100 countries. Thanks to initial funding from Brazil, it already supports projects on several continents, with strong participation from countries in the Global South.

This Declaration is not just words: it places the battle against disinformation on the same level as reducing emissions or adaptation. Because without trust in information, no citizen or political mobilization can succeed.  « In the fight against climate change, truth is not a luxury: it is a weapon for survival. »
